On this page you will find information on past and current math chapters. Every chapter has a set of skills that we cover, as well as some key vocabulary that we use in the in our math lesson.

Chapter 1: Numbers to five

Chapter 12: Counting on and Counting Back
Skills:
  •  counting on by using fingers

How to help your child with theses skills: tell your child a subtraction story ( there are 10 apples and four are rotten. how many are not rotten?) ask them to hod up 10 fingers and put down the same amount of fingers that there is rotten apples.



Chapter 13: Patterns

How to help your child with these skills: Talk about different patterns and ask them to describe a pattern to you. Ask them to draw a pattern for you.

Chapter 14: Number Facts
Skills:
  • Adding by combining sets
  • Using a ten-frame to count on to 20

  • Combining sets
  • In all (Jhanii has 5 apples in all)

How to help your child with these skills: Lay out two sets of similar objects ( red apples and green apples, forks and spoons, etc) and ask how many objects are there in all. then ask them to draw a tens frame and figure out how many more to 20.

Chapter 15: Length and Height
Skills:
  • Using terms such as long, longer, longest, short, shorter, and shortest to compare lengths
  • Using objects such as paper clips to measure lengths

How to help your child with these skills: Ask your child to put objects such as pencils in order form shortest to longest. If available use paper clips to measure these objects and have them use fingers to find out many more or how many fewer paper clips each object is compared to another.
Chapter 16:  Classifying and sorting

  • Sorting objects by 1 or 2 properties, such as color, size, or shape.

How to help your child with these skills:  After washing laundry have your child sort the laundry by items, colors, or person it belongs to.
 Chapter 17: Addition stories
Skills:
  • Forming addition sentences from addition stories
  • Writing addition sentences using the symbols + and =
Vocabulary:
  • Addition sentence ( 3 + 2 = 5)
  • Read it as three and two make five
How to help your child with these skills: Tell your child a simple addition story ( Angel has 3 apples and ZyQuan gives him 2 more apples. How many apples does Angel have in all?) Ask child  your child to first tell you the addition sentence and then have them write it down.


Chapter 18: Subtraction Stories
Skills:

  • Forming subtraction sentences from subtraction stories
  • Writing subtraction sentences using the symbols - and =
Vocabulary
  • Subtraction sentence ( 6 - 2 = 4)
  • Read it as six take away two is four
How to help your child with these skills: Tell your child a simple subtraction story ( Tytianna has 6 oranges and she shares 2 with Latasha. How many Oranges does Tytianna have left?) Ask your child to tell you the subtraction sentence and then have them write it down.


Chapter 19: Measurement
Skills:

  • Using the terms holds more, holds less and holds the same amount to compare the capacity of containers
Vocabulary:

How to help your child with these skills: Using different size bowls have your child guess which one would hold more or less. Then fill them with an object such as grapes or cotton balls and have them count the amount in each to see which one holds more or holds less.
Chapter 20: Money
Skills:
  • Knowing the values of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter
  • using different combinations of coins to buy items no more than $0.30
Vocabulary:

How to help your child with these skills: Have a pretend yard sale and make a few items no more then $0.30 then have your child use a combinations of coins to purchase the items.
